What is the Hydrogen Breath Test?
The Hydrogen Breath Test is a fast and efficient way for clinicians to assess their patients’ digestive issues. Most commonly, the test is used to diagnose small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). The tests are non-invasive and can be performed in the comfort of the patient’s home.
What is SIBO?
Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is a common cause of functional bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and suspected malabsorption. SIBO is a condition in which colonic-type bacteria (resembling bacteria normally found in the colon) proliferate in large numbers in the small intestine.

How is the test performed?
1. There is a 24-hour preparation before the test if performed.
2. In the first 12 hours, dietary restrictions must be followed. Refer to the test kit instructions for permitted foods.
3. The last 12 hours is a fasting period. Only water can be consumed.
4. Collect a baseline breath sample.
5. After collecting the baseline breath sample, mix the lactulose with 8 ounces of water and drink immediately.
6. Breath samples are collected every 20 minutes thereafter until all 10 tubes are used.
